What health studies have been done on the degraded areas of the Great Lakes?
As part of the Canada-Ontario Agreement to consider the impacts of pollution on human health, Health Canada undertook health studies focusing on Areas of Concern. They studied the 17 original Canadian sites, and compiled statistics on the incidence of disease and death for each community. Although they did not suggest a direct correlation between environmental contaminants and health problems, they looked at those health problems where environmental contaminants could be a contributing factor. One of the areas of concern with a significantly high incidence of disease and death was the Windsor and Essex County area, in the Detroit Area of Concern. Health Canada’s data showed that over a seven-year period there were a thousand excess deaths and forty thousand excess hospitalizations in the Windsor area.
