The Greens say that the federal government has an obligation to every Australian child to use its considerable powers to halt the upwards trend in childhood obesity. The Greens have several times tried to ban junk food advertising during children’s television – but so far, the ban has been blocked by Labor and the Coalition. The Greens’ bill would, if passed, tackle childhood obesity by banning junk food advertising during children’s television viewing hours, as well as in schools. An advertising ban alone will not eliminate the problem of obesity.
