What Have Other Studies Found When Researchers Phone Parents of Autistic Children?
When research on autism is done, generally, researchers telephone parents or guardians. In one study more than 78,000 kids ages three to seven were called. The parents/guardians were asked whether a physician or other health-care professional had ever told them their child had autism or any related condition such as Asperger’s disorder. Just over 1,400 answered “yes.” In half of those cases, the autism was mild. Researchers noted autism is common among boys, but not so frequently found in girls. Autism is more common among white children than black or Hispanic kids. Sometimes the children are misdiagnosed.
