Manchester University merged with UMIST and formed the largest conventional University in the UK. The new institution is simply called The University of Manchester. In legal terms both the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST ceased to exist when the University of Manchester came into existence on October 1st, 2004. The most apparent change in the campus is probably the recent demolition of the huge Maths Tower on Oxford Road.
