The Islamic movement and women in Turkey by Sedes Ozturk For more than a decade now, we have been witness to a remarkable revival of Islamic movements in the Muslim world from the Maghreb to Central Asia. My intention here is to analyse this evolution as it was experienced in Turkey and underline the specific features of the movement as well as the dynamics of the confrontation which opposes it to the feminist movement. The radical turn taken by Islamic ideology and its political success (i.e. the founding of an Islamic republic in Iran) should be of particular interest to those of us who make women’s oppression their concern because it is now clear that women are going to hold an important place in the discourse and actions of Islamic movements.
