What has been the trend in each of the separate types of violent offenses?
There are three trends over the past 40 years in the rates of murder, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assaults (see Figure 2). First, each type of violent crime decreased in the 1990s. Second, the rates of murder and armed robbery decreased more during the 1990s than the rates of rape and aggravated assault. Third, over this 40-year period the smallest change occurred in the rate of murder offenses. From 1960 to 2001 the murder rate increased from 5.1 offenses per 100,000 people in 1960 to 5.6 offenses in 2001.
