What harm does lead cause?
Lead can affect people as well as pets. Even low levels of lead in your home can build up in the body over time. Children under the age of 6 and pregnant women are at greatest risk. Children can have; learning disabilities, decreased growth, hyperactivity, impaired hearing, and brain damage. Pregnant women can unwittingly transfer lead from their bodies to their unborn children. Question: What are the odds my home contains lead? Answer: Most of the homes containing lead are pre-1950, unfortunately your home could contain lead if built before 1978, and the only way to know is to have a professional test it. If you are having remodeling work performed on your home you are required to have it tested or assume there is lead present – which will add considerably to the costs to remodel. It is cheaper to test and find no lead, than to assume lead is present.
