What happens when you put Bromine water with an Alkene and Alkane?
bromine water test ( as it is called) is a test for unsaturation… alkanes are saturated compounda and are unaffected by the bromine water… hence the color of the liquid does not change… but when you add it to alkene, due to the double bonds, the alkene undergoes anti addition… bromine atoms are used up and the color of the solution goes dim as alkyl di halides are colorless…
