When sodium hydroxide and magnesium are reacted, sodium metal, magnesium oxide and hydrogen gas will form. The hydrogen escapes from the reaction, and burns when it comes in contact with air. When the reaction takes place under an inert atmosphere, the sodium will be in reasonable pure form.
