What happens when each parent has a different parenting style?
This may be a source of tension in the family. Typically, when we are dating, we tend to gravitate toward others who either were raised in a similar style (especially children of authoritative parents), or at least whose views on parenting are compatible with our own. In general, the greater the discrepancy between parents in their parenting styles, and the more strongly each parent feels about the proper way to raise children, the more important it is to communicate about this issue and strive for consensus. In many families one parent tends to assume the bulk of the responsibility for dealing with the children from day to day. That person’s parenting style then has the greatest influence upon the children.
