What happens when a wastewater overflow occurs and the wastewater enters a creek or storm drain?
Following an overflow of any size to a water body, a long list of regulatory agencies is informed as soon as possible, and a full disclosure of the facts surrounding the overflow is made. Although it is infrequent when an overflow does occur, there is a very detailed procedure City staff follows to insure that all appropriate parties are apprised of the situation and the corrective actions taken. When necessary, the water body will be posted with signs to prevent water contact, and bacteriological testing will be performed. Fortunately, there are very few incidents of this type, since the Citys sewage system is in good physical condition and is being maintained in a professional fashion. Lines are cleaned, televised, and are constantly being evaluated. The City has also completed a Wastewater Master Plan to identify areas of needed improvements.
