What happens when a mother gives birth while incarcerated?
The Virginia Department of Corrections provides this care by transporting pregnant females to state teaching hospitals to receive the necessary medical attention. In addition, a plan is prepared prior to the birth in coordination with the Department of Social Services for subsequent care of the newborn infant. The infants are not allowed to return to prison with the mother. http://coy.state.va.us/docs/Incarcerated%20Parents.
