What happens when a left fielder catches a ball off Fenway Parks Green Monster?

The left fielder must catch it if he wants to throw the ball back to the infield as quick as possible because the ball is still in play. If he doesn’t catch it, and lets it drop on the ground, that would just waste more time of his picking up the ball and then throwing it back to the infield, so I would prefer catching it even though it’s not considered an out.
