The laboratory that analyzes the screening (blood lead test), must report the result to the Department of Health and Senior Services and the physician that requested the test. The Department then alerts the local health department where the child lives. The local health department sends out a Public Health Nurse, who works with the child’s physician and if applicable the child’s insurance carrier, to inform the family about lead poisoning and to help the caregiver get the medical attention the child needs.
