What happens to the salty byproduct left over after river water is processed?
Final decisions on what would be done with the byproduct, called demineralization concentrate, have not been reached. However, utilities’ conceptual project designs assume discharge of the concentrate back to the river. Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) regulations would have to be met and permits issued for such a discharge to occur.
