What happens to the recycled waste taken from our doorstep (paper, plastic, tins, green waste etc)?
Recycled waste is taken to a MRF for sorting and separating. The separated materials are then baled together and sold on the open market. Q28. Are there any plans for further household waste recycling sites (HWRS) in the county, to ensure that everyone is close to one? At present, there are 11 HWRSs in the County. There has been a significant programme of upgrading and refurbishing these sites. The last two to be upgraded will be Worthing and East Grinstead. At present, there are no further additional sites planned but it is recognised that more may be needed. Q29. Does it all get land-filled anyway? No, at present in West Sussex we recycle 40% of our household waste. Working together, West Sussex local authorities will reduce landfill by being leaders in waste prevention and recycling, and by turning the remaining rubbish into resources. Q30. What will the Materials Resource Contract (MRMC) do for West Sussex? The MRMC will allow West Sussex to use rubbish as a resource and to further
