What happens to the money when no one wins?
Prizes unclaimed after one year are forfeited. By law, a minimum of 30% of the amount must return to the State as revenue. In recent years, however, the Lottery has returned the vast majority of those dollars to the State as revenue, opting instead to keep only a very small portionusually far less than 10%in reserve for the funding of special prizes and promotions. The small remaining amount goes into Lottery reserves to either fund additional prizes for a particular game or to fund special promotional initiatives.
