What happens to the lint in the new front loading washing machines?
The new Whirlpool, Maytag, Fridigdaire front loading machines all have self-cleaning lint filters. I think that during or at the end of the rinse cycle, the machine flushes the lint filter and the lint goes out the exit hose. Some brands like Avanti have filters that need to be cleaned, but the machine will tell you (clean lint filter light comes on) and it should be in the maintenance instructions that come with your washer. I spent some quality time on the phone with the fine folks at Whirlpool and they inform me that there is no lint filter on this washer. I do understand your concern; our Miele front-loader has a lint trap just before the pump to keep stuff from getting stuck in the pump, and we have fished some incredible stuff out of there. If your washer doesn’t have a lint filter that you manually clean, the lint goes down the drain. This is usually safe for both city sewers and septic systems. But looks like it’s not worth worrying about unless it gives you trouble. You could always shave the girls.
