What happens to the landfill gas given off from the waste at North Foreshore?

0

Methane rich landfill gas is produced when waste on the site decomposes. It is currently collected via a network of vertical wells and interconnecting pipework around the northern area of the site. Although the gas is burned off into the atmosphere, we are developing a project to make use of the landfill gas to produce `green` electricity. This is sold to the National Grid to generate a revenue for for the council. Landfill gas is a valuable and sustainable natural energy resource which will be used to benefit the people of Belfast. Initially we will generate five million watts per hour of green electricity which would power 6,000 homes.
