What happens to the fly ash?
Illini Bio-Energy will use a sand filled fluidized bed fire box which has been shown to be an efficient device for combusting coal and other fuels and to also be effective in limiting the release of air pollutants. Fly ash will exit and be captured in the downstream equipment comprising of the waste heat boiler and bag dust collector. There are currently several industrial uses for the collected fly ash. Coal combustion products become ingredients in concrete, wallboard, mortars, stuccos, blocks, bricks, shingles, paints and a variety of other building materials. They are also used to stabilize soils or wastes and can be used as structural fill or road base materials. They are even used by peanut farmers to improve their crop yields. The use of coal combustion products has increased more than 50 percent in the past decade. Illini Bio-Energy has been approached by several industries interested in the fly ash collected at the site.
