What happens to the bikes the Police recover?
Hundreds of bikes are recovered every year by South Wales Police and they are sold at auction, with the money made going to charitable causes. A Freedom of Information request found the number of bikes sold at auction in Cardiff was 408 in 2008, 377 in 2009 and so far in 2010 170 have been sold. The response from South Wales Police said: “Found bikes are kept for 2 months while attempts are made to trace the owner. After this 2 month period the ‘finder’ has a further 28 days in which to claim the property that they handed in. If they do not make that claim, the bicycle is sold at auction.” Reporting a stolen bike Stolen bikes can be reported to your local police station, see OurBobby for details.
