What Happens to Ozone?
When ozone collides with a contaminant in the air, the extra oxygen atom that was added splits off from the ozone molecule and attaches itself to the contaminant. The contaminant is then oxidized, or burned up, and destroyed along with the extra oxygen atom. Through the process of reacting with most air pollutants, ozone converts harmful substances into more harmless compounds such as carbon dioxide and water vapor. What remains is pure breathable oxygen.
