What happens to my phone number whilst transferring to a new network?

I’ve finally decided to transfer my Orange phone number to my Blyk sim card (yes I know there’s a load of advertising, but I can never be bothered to cary two phones round at once and I’m spending stupid money topping my Orange PAYG phone up whilst my FREE allowance goes unused on Blyk). Am I right in thinking that until I use my PAC, my orange number will continue to function as normal (i.e. even though it has been issued by Orange)? Once I have given my PAC to Blyk, will there be a phase during which I am unreachable on my number, or will the number only be deactivated on Orange once it is activated on Blyk. I don’t want to be missing calls, but also don’t want to have to send a ‘temporary’ phone number to everyone I know. I realise that it might work slightly differently with Blyk, but experience that others have with other providers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all…Sorry if the answer to this is posted elsewhere, I did try to find an answer.
