Virginia Tech has considerable latitude to establish good relationships with industry which benefit all parties. In most cases, issues of intellectual property arising from industry-supported research at universities focus around balancing the interest of the university, inventors, Commonwealth of Virginia and the sponsor. The extent to which state resources are used to support the research is an important consideration as is fulfilling the mission of sharing new discoveries widely.
