What happens to indirect costs from research grants? How are they distributed?
When? A: As part of the annual budget process, the MSU Office of Planning and Budgets (OPB) includes in each major administrative unit’s (MAU) budget a “Research Facilitation Grant” generally amounting to 20 % of the indirect costs charged to the MAU in the previous year. In some MAUs, the full 20% is given back to units as part of the MAU budget process. Other MAUs keep the 20% and allocate it to the units within the MAU as needed. In other cases, the MAU keeps part and allocates the rest to the units within the MAU. The VPRGS receives a special allocation of 5% of the overall total.
