What happens to Gabelle in A Tale of Two Cities?
I came to the conclusion that Gabelle was offered his freedom from the prison to which he had been taken and held if he would write a letter to Charles Darnay in order to get him to France so Madame Defarge’s lust for revenge could be satisfied. Of course, I may be suspicious-minded, and it could just be that he was used for that purpose and freed as a reward for doing what the republic believed was a patriotic thing (drawing Darnay back to Paris). Whichever the case, Gabelle was freed from prison, and the last you hear of him is at Charles Darnay’s trial.
