What happens to abandoned houses if nobody buys them? Do local governments wind up owning the property?
be careful of loosely using the term “abandoned” with a property. All properties in the United States are owned by someone or some legal entity. There is no requirement that the “owner” care for the property in most areas and he/she/they/it has the right to have you arrested for trespassing without notice [unless the property is a public park or similar]. Even property owned by the government, such as a house, is not free for use by anyone who wants to use it and you can and will be arrested if you are there without good reason. *** That apparently “abandoned” house might be owned by one of the following: 1. the last folk to live there or their landlord 2. it may be in the process of foreclosure to some lender, but the legal process isn’t yet complete — possibly because the lender isn’t moving the case forward because doing so would make the lender liable for costs or its condition. 3. it may be owned by some party who did foreclose on it, but hasn’t taken any action to sell or otherw
