What happens on a 72 hour hold in a psychiatric ward ?
On a 72 hour hold what they do is evaluate your situation/condition. They aren’t going to force you to eat and they won’t start tube feedings until you have a dramatic weight loss. A tube feeding is very unpleasant to go through. They put a naso/gastric tube in through your nose and feed it down into your stomach and give you liquid nutrients along the order of formula. They don’t use intervenous feedings as a rule unless you’re in a coma or something. As for letting you lay in bed they won’t let you do that either. There will be programming that you will have to attend and therapy sessions and the like. At the end of the 72 hours they will decide if you can be managed on an outpatient basis or not. If they feel that you pose a significant danger to yourself or others then they can and usually do go for a civil commitment. Then, in order for you to get out you have to show compliance with your treatment program and that means following all the rules they set up for you. That’s basicall
