What happens in the event of cost overruns? How do extra monies get approved?
A. The referendum approves a limited amount of expenditure and our estimates include contingencies to address unforeseen bidding and building conditions. Also, to counter costs we regularly seek alternate ways to deliver the scope of the project while dealing with cost pressures. For example, the rising cost of steel has been highly publicized recently. Should steel costs escalate severely, there are numerous alternate structural systems that can be explored using different materials. Costs will be monitored closely from the outset of the project, through bidding, and construction. The referendum seeks approval for a limited amount to complete the projects. Increasing this amount could not be done without voter approval.
