What happens if Turnitin matches text in my assignment?
It is extremely unusual for Turnitin not to detect some matching text in an assignment. For example, usually sections of the reference list will match with other documents. Also, your writing will contain common terms and phrases used in your field of study. Turnitin will pick these up. However, you should be more concerned about LARGE blocks of text that could indicate poor paraphrasing. Direct quotes will also be identified as matching text by Turnitin if they are contained in a document in Turnitin’s database. Remember, Turnitin is only a text-matching tool. Your will have the opportunity to review the revision (draft) submission to identify areas that need to be changed. Just because Turnitin finds a match in your assignment DOES NOT necessary mean that it is plagiarism. Your lecturer reviews the final Turnitin report to determine if any matched text has been correctly referenced and whether matches identified by Turnitin indicate that plagiarism may have occurred.
