WHAT HAPPENS IF THE DREAM ACT NEVER PASSES?
If the DREAM Act fails to pass, then undocumented students who have spent the bulk of their lives in the U.S. would be forced to leave the country if they were to pursue legal employment or careers. This would likely be detrimental to their wellbeing, as they not only would be forced to leave what they consider home, but they would be immersed into a country whose culture and organizational systems are completely foreign to them. Furthermore, the undocumented individuals who are sent back to their countries of origin may not even know how to speak the language, which would make it extremely hard to function there. But there is hope for eligible undocumented students, even if the DREAM Act does not pass. While individual states cannot legalize undocumented immigrants, they can allow these students to attend their universities and obtain in-state tuition. Currently, there are 10 states in the United States that allow undocumented students to attend their facilities. Of course, there are
