What happens if the Constabulary doesn’t have a scheme?

The requirement for an effective Race Equality Scheme is a requirement in law. If we don’t have one or if our scheme is not working we could be taken to court in the same way that we would be if we failed to meet health and safety standards for example. It is part of the role of the Commission for Racial Equality to ensure that public bodies have effective schemes. The Devon and Cornwall Police Authority also have a Race Equality Scheme which enables them to oversee the work of the Constabulary as part of the Annual Policing Plan.
