What happens if my short term disability continues beyond 26 weeks and my LTD application is still pending?
If your application for LTD benefits is pending at the end of your short term disability, you may be placed on an unpaid leave of absence for 30 days. If your application is approved within this time period, the benefit is retroactive to the end of your short term disability. If your LTD application is still pending at the end of the 30 day unpaid leave of absence, your unpaid leave of absence may be extended for an additional 30 days. If your application for LTD benefits is denied, your employment may be terminated. However, you have the right to appeal the decision of denial with the long term insurance carrier.
