What happens if I decide halfway through my programme that I want to switch to another specialty?
It is important to consider career options carefully. It is only possible to change specialties by applying competitively for: • another specialty group or core programme • direct to another specific specialty programme (including GP) However, relevant competences achieved in the first specialty will be taken into account by the new specialty programme into which you have entered. Doctors who have been appointed to a specialty group or core programme each of which leads to more specific specialty programmes will, provided they have made satisfactory progress, be able to progress to one or other of the subsequent specialty programmes, although it may not always be possible to accommodate their first choice. For example, the core medical programme which covers years ST1 and ST2, and which leads to training programmes in specific related medical specialties from year ST3.
