What happens if an NI/ESI submits two different R01 applications, and NIH decides to fund the first application before the second application is reviewed?
NI/ESI status for an application is calculated based on investigator status on the date each application is submitted to Grants.gov. Therefore, if the investigator submits a second R01 application before he/she loses NI/ESI status by earning an R01 award, then the second application retains the NI/ESI status. If the second application is unsuccessful, the resubmission application retains NI/ESI status as long as the submission is made 13 months of the submission date of the original application, as described above.
