What happens during the phase 1 study of a clinical trial?
Phase 1 studies assess a drug’s safety in humans, as well as how it’s absorbed, metabolized and excreted. It also investigates side effects that may occur as dosage levels are increased. A phase 1 study lasts several months and uses (20 to 100) healthy people who are usually paid for participating. About 70% of experimental drugs pass this initial phase of testing.
