What happens during STD testing?
The process of STI testing for males is relatively easy and comfortable. Generally, the physician will examine the penis and surrounding areas, checking for infectious sores indicative of herpes or syphilis and genital wart outbreaks that appear with HPV. A blood test is required for HIV and Hepatitis B and C. Testing for Chlamydia and gonorrhea is slightly invasive but important for maintaining sexual health. The physician will use a swap, like a Q-tip, to take a sample from the inside of the urethra. Remember, if you are worried you have a STI it is important to visit you health care provider to receive testing and prevent the spread to other people. To protect yourself from STI transmission, wear a condom.
