What Happens During Root Canal Surgery?
Either a root canal specialist (endodontist) or a dentist can perform a root canal procedure. This is a multi-appointment process. To keep the tooth free of saliva and dry, a rubber dam will be placed while the tooth is numb. Bacteria, nerve tissue and pulp are removed from the tooth via an access opening created in the top of the tooth. Root canal files are placed into the opening to perform the removal of this material. Tooth decay can be removed with the use of specialized dental instruments. After your tooth has been cleaned, a permanent filling will be placed. The exception to this would be in the case of additional appointments. Then you may receive a temporary filling. Your appointment will probably occur within the week.
