What happens during inclement weather?
Rain and afternoon thunderstorms are common in Florida and may affect some camp and free time activities. Most program components are not usually affected by wet weather. A camp supervisor will determine if any activities need to be postponed or canceled, and we will reschedule an event if the camp schedule allows. Indoor activities are planned if thunderstorms prevail.
All groups are advised to bring a waterproof jacket, hood or cap, plus a change of footwear. During spring / summer, rain showers may occur but this does not curtail activities, as most of the activities take place on site, which is well sheltered. Residential groups have the advantage of re-scheduling certain activities if the weather is severe.
Mother Nature is full of surprises and there are some great adventures in those surprises. We issue a complete gear list including inclement weather gear, as we continue to program through most conditions. That said, the children are monitored constantly and sessions/schedules are changed appropriately to ensure that the experience with inclement weather remains a positive one. Of course, in the case of severe weather, ie. thunderstorms, we have plenty of indoor spaces for games and songs until the storm passes. We have access to a large basement on site as well, in the unlikely event of a very serious thunderstorm. Q – What type of insurance coverage does Camp Encounter have? The Superintendent of Schools is responsible for the final decision to hold schools on their normal schedule, delay the opening of schools two hours or to cancel all classes. The decision is made after law enforcement, the Troup County Emergency Management office, and the administrative staff reports are received from various locations throughout the county regarding road conditions. Other factors considered would be facility information (heat, cold, power), school parking lot conditions, temperature, wind chill factor, snow and ice build up on main and secondary roads. A decision will be made and the public will be notified by 6:00 AM. Local weather stations in Atlanta and Columbus will be informed of any school opening delays or school closings. If there is a two hour delay, your bus pick-up time will be two hours later, so that if your child normally is picked up at 7:00 AM, their delayed pick-up time would be 9:00 AM.
