The family talks about their problems and gives examples of the things that are bothering them in their lives. With the counselor, they decide on goals they want to reach and work on how to get to those goals.

On first contact with the Center for Counseling , we ask the student to complete a brief Intake form. It typically takes about 10-15 minutes to complete this form which includes demographic information as well as signing the Consent for Treatment and Confidentiality information. During the first appointment the counselor will speak with you to gather information about your current concerns, as well as background information that will better help us understand your needs. You and your counselor will then begin to develop a strategy for action. Counseling sessions are typically 45-50 minutes in length. This first session is also a chance to determine if you feel comfortable with your counselor. If, after the first session, or at any time in the counseling process, you feel as though you may benefit from seeing a different counselor, please make that known to your counselor or to someone in the Center.
