What happens during a crown procedure?

Your dentist will numb the treatment area and prepare the tooth for the crown placement. The tooth will need to be reduced a bit in order to fit the new crown on top. Following the tooth preparation, the dentist will create a model of the prepared tooth, from which a custom-fabricated dental crown is made. While the crown is being built, you will need to wear a temporary crown until your final appointment. When you return, the dentist will remove the temporary and cement the definitive crown. Some patients with extensive decay may require a root canal before the crown placement.
