When early-onset menopause occurs, the ovaries gradually stop producing estrogen and progesterone, the hormones that regulate a woman’s monthly reproductive cycle. By the time menopause is finished, these levels are one-tenth the amount they were premenopause. A woman can no longer become pregnant when she “hits” menopause. Causes Most of the time, it is impossible to determine why a woman is going through early menopause. Sometimes, however, the cause is clear. For example, a woman under the age of 45 who has had her ovaries or uterus surgically removed will go through early menopause. Early menopause might also occur if a woman has undergone chemotherapy or radiation treatments for cancer. Premature ovarian failure (POV) is also another cause for early menopause. POV occurs when the ovaries either fail to produce eggs or fail to produce the hormones needed to ovulate. More often than not, POV is caused by an autoimmune disorder. In a few cases, it may be genetic or caused by a viral
