What happens at a West Coast Swing class night?
At the start of the night there is a beginners’ class covering some of the basic moves and techniques that you need to begin to dance West Coast Swing. This is followed by some time to practise what you’ve learnt with the other dancers in the class. Then there is an intermediate class, which usually takes an element of the beginners’ class and extends it through a more complex short routine. You can join in with this class or, if you prefer at first, you can watch to see what happens! At the end of the night there is more ‘freestyle’ time to practise moves from either of the classes. What do I wear? Dance is a physical activity so wear something comfortable. There is no dress code for West Coast Swing, but most people wear jeans or trousers and a top that won’t restrict movement. And what about shoes? For West Coast Swing you need to wear something reasonably flat and flexible on your feet, with a smooth sole. Later on, if you want to, you can invest in ‘proper’ dance shoes.
