What happens after the Speech from the Throne is read?
A11: The Standing Orders, the rules of the House of Commons, require six additional days of debate after the Speech is given. These days need not be consecutive. The Throne Speech process therefore includes: Day of the Speech: The Speech is given in the Senate Chamber. Following the Speech, Members of the House of Commons return to their Chamber, where two Members selected by the Prime Minister move and second respectively an Address in Reply to the Speech from the Throne. This offers the thanks of the House of Commons to the Governor General for the Speech. Day 1: The debate on the Address in Reply continues on the first of the six days of debate on the Throne Speech. The Leader of the Opposition makes a speech regarding the Governments intentions and moves an amendment to the Address in Reply.
