WHAT HAPPENS AFTER COLPOSCOPY AND/OR BIOPSY?
After completing the Colposcopy, the doctor will inform you of his findings and the cause of your abnormal pap smear. If a biopsy has been done, the decision with regards to treatment will be made when the report of the biopsy is available (usually about 5-7 days). Often the treatment will consist of either a vaginal cream or medicine by mouth. If it appears an infection is causing the abnormal cells, a culture of the cervix is sometimes performed. Your health care provider may advise that you have Cryosurgery, also called Cryotherapy , as a means of treating the abnormal cells. However, if the biopsy or Colposcopy findings indicate more severe disease, laser surgery or cone biopsy (excision of part to the cervix) may be recommended. TREATMENT WITH CRYOSURGERY Cryosurgery is “freezing” an area of the cervix. This is done with a probe that attains sub-zero temperatures.
