Many years ago Virgin Group sold Virgin Radio to SMG. SMG continued to use the Virgin name for the station under licence from Virgin Group as they thought the Virgin name had a good reputation. However, they had to pay Virgin each year for the right to call the station Virgin Radio Last year SMG sold the station on to an Indian company, who decided they didn’t want to pay Virgin Group to use the Virgin brand. Consequently they had to rename the station. The station has been known as Absolute Radio for about a year now.
