Ever wonder what happens to the trees that we log in our national and public forests? Why do we do that anyway? Primarily, we harvest trees to provide wood, lumber, paper and other wood by-products that we need and use everyday in all of our lives. We cannot grow enough trees on private timberland to meet all of our needs for the over 5,000 products which we make from wood. So we must rely on public forests to help meet our needs. Because of modern forestry science we can improve upon many elements in a forest eco-system, and provide for a healthy forest while utilizing a renewable resource. So what happens to the trees logged in this picture? This particular harvest involved approximately 17 acres. Each acre averaged 20 trees per acre in this particular case and each tree averaged 3000 board feet per tree. The average 2,000 sq. ft. home uses about 13,000 board feet of lumber/plywood/particle board. This harvest amounted to approx. 1,056,000 board feet of lumber. The logging and trucki
