What happened to the great library of Alexandria?
There are several theories. There is evidence that the library survived the war between Julius Caesar and Ptolemy in 48 BCE. Some scholars argue that the contents were removed to Constantinople before the 4th century CE. Still others say the library was destroyed by Imperial decree with other “heathen temples”, burned to the ground in the 4th century CE. One more theory suggests that the Moslems destroyed the library in the 7th century. In any case, by the 8th century CE, the library was no longer functioning.
