What happened to the first triumvirate?
Crassus was killed by the Parthians in 53 BC, after being captured at the battle of Carrhae. This effectively ended the Triumvirate, as Crassus was not replaced and Caesar was absent from Rome, still engaged in the conquest of Gaul. Pompey Magnus was murdered in Egypt, having fled there after defeat against Caesar at Pharsalus in 48 BC. Julius Caesar was assassinated on the floor of the Senate by political enemies in 44 BC.
