Those people who were slaves at that point were given freedom. Some made their way back to Africa and others found jobs that paid wages. Quite a few stayed where they were and took wages, but in some cases they didn’t know what they were entitled to and it was as bad as slavery. I think Thailand phased out slavery the best. King Chulalongkorn promised that no one born in his reign would ever be a slave. Those that were already slaves were helped, but not promised freedom on the spot. It was a gradual abolishment of the slavery system.
